Manchester City and Inter Milan meet in the 2023 Champions League final on Saturday 10th June at 8pm (UK time).
Two years on from their Champions League final debut, Man City are back in the showcase and looking to be crowned champions of Europe for the first time. It’s been a fantastic season in the Champions League for Man City, who will also be hoping this caps off a Treble, becoming just the second English men’s side to achieve that feat after bitter rivals Manchester United in 1999.
Man City topped their group with relative ease, winning 14 points from their six matches against Borussia Dortmund, Sevilla and Copenhagen, only drawing their final two games when qualification was already secured. They then thrashed RB Leipzig 8-1 on aggregate in the last 16, courtesy of a stunning Erling Haaland performance. Bayern Munich were then brushed aside 4-1 in the quarter-finals and defending champions Real Madrid 5-1 last time out. Interestingly, in all three of Man City’s knockout ties this season, one of the legs finished as a draw.
Inter, meanwhile, are in the Champions League final for the first time since 2009/10 when, of course, they won the competition for the third time. Victory here would mean that just five teams have won the Champions League more times than Inter, also closing the gap on rivals AC Milan to three Champions Leagues.
Nobody expected Inter to get to this stage, especially given the lineup of their group. But Inter finished second behind Bayern Munich and head of Barcelona and Viktoria Plzen, only losing two games to the German side. In the knockout stages a pair of Portuguese sides were beaten in the last 16 and quarter-finals, as Inter knocked out Porto 1-0 on aggregate and Benfica 5-3. Then, in the semi-finals, Inter recorded a 3-0 victory over rivals AC Milan to take the Derby della Madonnina bragging rights.

As mentioned, Haaland was the man in Man City’s 8-1 win over RB Leipzig, scoring five in the second leg at the Etihad. But it’s not just against Leipzig that he was on top form in the Champions League this season. The Norwegian is the top scorer in the Champions League with 12 goals so far and though he didn’t score against Real Madrid, there were three shots on target in the second leg.
It feels like this is Man City’s time and apart from two draws against Copenhagen and Dortmund in the group stage, Pep Guardiola’s side have scored in every Champions League game this season. However, Inter Milan have also had fun in front of goal, only failing to score in two games against Bayern Munich and in the second leg of their last 16 tie vs Porto.
